How to open a .bwproject file without Bitwig
Updated October 2026
Have the .dawproject? Convert it now
Upload a .dawproject exported from Bitwig Studio and download a native Logic Pro, Ableton Live, FL Studio, Pro Tools or REAPER project. 3 conversions a month free, no account.
Open the converter →The honest answer first: you can’t. A .bwproject is Bitwig Studio’s own project format, it isn’t documented, and no other DAW or converter reads it — Doseedo included. What Bitwig does write for other apps is a .dawproject, and that one converts to the DAW you have.
Why nothing reads a .bwproject
Bitwig has never published the .bwproject layout. A reader built by guessing would be the worst kind of converter — one that hands back a project that looks complete and isn’t. So instead of reading the native file, the industry route is the format Bitwig created for exactly this job: DAWproject, an open, documented container that Bitwig Studio 5 and later exports.
The realistic options
Get a DAWproject export, then convert it (keeps it editable): in Bitwig Studio, File › Export… › DAWproject writes one .dawproject with the tracks, clips, notes, audio, mixer and plugins inside it. If the project came from a collaborator, ask them for that file. Upload it to Doseedo and download a native Logic .logicx, Ableton .als, FL Studio .flp, Pro Tools session or REAPER .rpp.
Open the .dawproject directly (if your DAW reads it): Studio One / Fender Studio Pro 6.5+ and Cubase 14+ import a .dawproject themselves — no conversion needed.
Ask for stems (loses the project): bounced stems play anywhere but stop being a project. Use them when you only need the audio.
What carries over from the .dawproject — and what doesn't
Converting a Bitwig .dawproject with Doseedo, what arrives editable: tracks and group tracks with their names, levels, pans and mutes, clips with every note, audio with its files (they travel inside the .dawproject), tempo and time signature, and markers; going to Logic, Ableton or Pro Tools, sends arrive too and the format’s built-in EQ, compressor, gate and limiter map to the DAW’s own devices. Third-party plugins come across with their saved state where they’re installed — effects and instruments into Ableton and FL Studio, effects into Logic and Pro Tools.
Bitwig’s own instruments and devices, CLAP plugins and clip gain don’t come across, and automation isn’t promised yet — the conversion report names each one. Nothing is silently dropped.

FAQ
Can I open a .bwproject without Bitwig Studio?
No. The .bwproject format is Bitwig’s own and undocumented, and no other app reads it. Export a .dawproject from Bitwig Studio (File › Export… › DAWproject) — that converts to Logic, Ableton, FL Studio, Pro Tools or REAPER, or opens directly in Studio One 6.5+ and Cubase 14+.
Can Doseedo convert a .bwproject?
No — an uploaded .bwproject is answered with the export instructions rather than a guessed conversion. Upload the .dawproject Bitwig exports instead; that converts with its tracks, clips, notes, audio and mixer.
What is the difference between .bwproject and .dawproject?
A .bwproject is the project Bitwig saves for itself. A .dawproject is the open interchange file Bitwig exports for other apps — a documented zip of XML plus the audio and plugin states.
Is converting a .dawproject free?
3 conversions a month are free with no account; a free account gets 120 credits a month (a conversion is 1 credit).
