How to get an MP3 out of an Ableton Live project

Someone has sent you an .als and you want to hear it before you write back. There is no play button on a project file, and the usual answer is that you need Live in front of you, plus everything the set was built out of. What you have instead is the arrangement, which is the half that travels. That is the gap these instruments fill.

  1. Add your .als: The set on its own. Everything this needs — the tempo, the track names, the clips and the notes inside them — is in that one document, so the folder around it can stay where it is.
  2. It is read on our server: An .als is gzipped XML rather than plain text, so the read runs on our side rather than in the page — which is the reason this one asks you to sign in.
  3. Choose instruments, then bounce: Instruments are the first screen, not an afterthought: nothing in the set says what should play its lines here. File → Export audio… then bounces the mix through track gain, pan, mute and solo to a 256 kbps MP3.

Can I convert an .als to MP3?

No, and not by any other converter either. A set stores an arrangement and a list of pointers, so there is no waveform in the file to decode; the arrangement is given modelled instruments and performed instead. The mix you actually made comes out of Live's own Export Audio/Video, on a machine that has the devices.

Do I need an account?

Yes, a free one. A Live set is read on our server rather than in your browser — unlike an .flp, an .rpp, a .cpr or a zipped .logicx, which are all read on your own machine — and the render that makes the sound runs on a GPU. Both of those steps need you signed in.

Do I need the Project folder?

No, not for the notes: tempo, track names and every clip are inside the .als. The folder only changes things if there is recorded audio in it, in which case File → Import session plays that audio instead of performing anything.

Can I bring the MP3 back in and keep working?

No. Re-encoding an already-encoded file stacks one lossy pass on another, and nothing gets back what the first pass discarded — bounce a WAV for anything that carries on.

  • A set travels without its library

    An .als is a few hundred kilobytes of compressed XML: track names, clip positions, notes, tempo, and a long list of pointers. What those pointers name lives somewhere else — in the `Samples` folder beside the set, and in the devices installed on the machine that made it. Live ships a command called Collect All and Save precisely because those links break; it exists to gather the referenced audio back into the Project folder before a set goes anywhere. A set handed over on its own has left its library behind, which is why opening one on another machine gives you missing-sample warnings and silent racks. The arrangement survives that trip. The sound does not.

  • Thirty-six players stand in for it

    What fills the gap is a palette of thirty-six modelled instruments — saxophones, brass, strings, winds, keys, guitars, drums and voice — and every track in the set is given one of them. The notes are yours; the playing is not. A rack in Live is a chain you built and saved; an instrument here is a fixed player you hand a part to, so the choice in front of you is who plays the line rather than how a patch is wired. That render runs on a GPU behind the same free account. What arrives at the end of it is a re-performance of your arrangement, NOT a reproduction of your devices. Your Operator patch stays in Live.

  • The length decides the file, and nothing else does

    The mix is encoded at 256 kbps by lamejs — LAME compiled to JavaScript — running in the page, so the encoding is the one part of this that never leaves your machine. A constant bitrate means the size is settled by the length of the set and by nothing else: a forty-track arrangement and a four-track sketch of the same duration come out the same size, about 1.9 MB a minute, because the format spends its bits on seconds rather than on detail. Once spent they are gone. That is the trade an MP3 makes — portability bought with detail it cannot get back.
