How to get an MP3 out of an Ableton Live project

Someone sent you a Live set, or you are away from the machine that has Live, and you want to hear the arrangement. An .als stores the song as a document (clips, notes, levels) and points at everything that makes sound: devices only Live can run, samples on another disk. The document is enough to hear the writing. That is what gets played here, and the MP3 is the result.

  1. Drop your .als: The set is read on our server, where its arrangement and MIDI clips come out. No account is needed to open it. Have the Project folder? Choose it instead, and the recordings and samples its audio clips play come with it.
  2. It renders by itself: The studio opens on the arrangement and starts the MP3 straight away. Each MIDI track's notes are played by a stand-in picked from its name (a drum rack on a kit, a bass on a bass), rendered on our server from a General MIDI sound set; audio clips from the folder play as recorded.
  3. Download the MP3: One 256 kbps file of the whole arrangement lands in your downloads. Your first three a month need no account; a free account gives you 120.

Can I convert an .als to MP3 without Ableton Live?

Yes, drop it here. What you get is the arrangement: MIDI clips played on stand-in instruments, audio clips from the Project folder as recorded. Not your Live mix: your devices, racks and plugins are not in the file, and nothing here runs them.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Why are some of my tracks silent?

They are audio clips whose files were not in what you dropped. Choose the Project folder, or a zip of it, after running File → Collect All and Save in Live, and they play.

Will it sound like my set?

No. The notes, their timing and the tempo are yours; the sound of a MIDI track is a General MIDI stand-in, and warping, automation and effects are not rendered. Signed in, Sources can play any track on a modelled instrument instead.

How long can the set be?

Up to 20 minutes and 40,000 notes for the stand-in render.

  • What a set keeps, and what it does not

    An .als is a gzipped XML document: tracks, clips, the notes inside each MIDI clip, the tempo, locators, mixer levels. What makes Live sound like your set (Operator patches, racks, Max devices, third-party plugins) is device state that only Live runs, and nothing here loads it. So the MIDI clips are played by stand-ins picked from their track names, the audio clips play as recorded, and Live's warping, automation lanes, sends and device chains are not rendered. It is the arrangement, heard; your Live mix comes out of Live's own Export Audio/Video.

  • Audio clips, and the Project folder that carries them

    A Live set points at its audio by path: recordings in the Project folder's Samples/Recorded, imports in Samples/Imported, and anything dragged in from elsewhere on the disk. Drop the .als alone and those clips have nothing to play; the studio says how many are missing rather than handing you a quiet file. Choose the Project folder, or drop a zip of it, and each clip plays from your copy, at its position and under its track name. Live's File → Collect All and Save copies every file a set uses into its Project folder first. Run it before you zip, or what lives outside the folder stays behind.

  • One bitrate, and what it costs

    256 kbps is the only bitrate on offer: no slider, nothing to get wrong. A constant bitrate means the size is set by the length of the set and nothing else: about 1.9 MB a minute, a forty-track arrangement and a four-track sketch of the same length alike. That is the trade an MP3 makes: portability bought with detail it cannot give back. Send the MP3; keep a WAV if you will keep working on the audio.
