Pro Tools sessions are a closed format, and opening one usually means owning Pro Tools. This opens the session in the browser and gives you what MIDI it holds as a Standard MIDI file.

  • Most Pro Tools sessions are mostly audio

    This is worth saying plainly before you upload anything: Pro Tools is an audio-first program, and a great many sessions contain no MIDI at all: the arrangement is regions of recorded audio. A MIDI export can only ever return notes that the session actually stores as notes, so a session of audio tracks will come back with nothing to write. If the parts you want are audio, the audio-to-MIDI converter is the tool that turns a recording into notes.

  • Opening a session without Pro Tools

    The session opens in the browser either way, so a .ptx from a collaborator is readable without a licence: the tracks, their names and the arrangement, whether or not there is MIDI to take out of it.
