How to get an MP3 out of a REAPER project

Someone sent you a REAPER project, or you are away from the computer that has REAPER and its plugins, and you want to hear it. The .rpp is a text file that describes the song and points at its sound. The description is enough to hear the writing, and with the project folder, the recordings too. That is what gets played here, and the MP3 is the result.

  1. Drop your .rpp: An .rpp is a text file, read in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to read it, and no account is needed. Have the project folder? Choose it instead, and the media its audio items play comes with it.
  2. It renders by itself: The studio opens on the arrangement and starts the MP3 straight away. Each track's notes are played by a stand-in picked from the track's name (a kick lane on a drum kit, a bass on a bass), rendered on our server from a General MIDI sound set, usually in seconds.
  3. Download the MP3: One 256 kbps file of the whole arrangement lands in your downloads. Your first three a month need no account; a free account gives you 120.

Can I convert an .rpp to MP3 without REAPER?

Why are some items silent?

They are audio items whose media was not in what you dropped. Choose the project folder, or a zip of it. REAPER's File → Save project as… with "Copy all media into project directory" gathers it first.

Will it sound like my project?

No. The notes, timing and tempo survive; the sound of a MIDI track is a General MIDI stand-in, and plugins, sends and automation are not rendered.

How long can the project be?

Up to 20 minutes and 40,000 notes for the stand-in render.

  • A text file that points at sound

    REAPER writes its project as plain text: tracks, items and their positions, the notes inside each MIDI item, the tempo, and a FILE line for every piece of media an audio item plays. The sound itself (the recordings, and whatever the plugins on each track make of them) lives elsewhere. MIDI items come out as notes and stand-ins picked from the track names play them. Audio items play only when their media came along: choose the project folder, or drop a zip of it, and each one plays from your copy at the position REAPER gave it. Files the project expects that were not there are counted, not passed over.

  • A demo of the writing, not your mix

    REAPER names tracks, not instruments, so a stand-in is a reading of the arrangement rather than a recovery of it: "Bass" gets a bass, "Keys" a piano, a track called "Track 7" gets a piano too. What lands is your arrangement in other hands: the notes, the timing and the tempo are yours, the sound is not. Plugins are never loaded here, by the reader or the render. Signed in, Sources can play any track on a modelled instrument; the mix you made only comes out of REAPER.

  • One bitrate, and what it costs

    256 kbps is the only bitrate on offer: about 1.9 MB a minute, so four minutes lands near 8 MB: one file that plays on anything. An MP3 is what you send someone for an opinion; keep a WAV if the audio will be worked on, because what an MP3 throws away does not come back.
