How to get a WAV out of a Bitwig project

You have a Bitwig project and something downstream wants audio — a mix engineer, another DAW, a submission — and no Bitwig to open it with. A .bwproject opens nowhere else, but File → Export → DAWproject writes an open file that carries the arrangement and the recordings inside it. Those are written out as they are; Bitwig's instruments are not in the file, so their clips are played on stand-ins.

  1. Export a .dawproject: In Bitwig Studio 5, File → Export → DAWproject; the file carries the tracks, the clips and the audio they play. Studio One 6.5+ and Cubase 14+ export the same file. Drop it here — the arrangement is read in your browser, and no account is needed to open it.
  2. It renders by itself: The studio opens on the arrangement and starts the WAV straight away: audio clips from the recordings inside the file, note clips on stand-ins picked from their track names, rendered on our server from a General MIDI sound set.
  3. Download the WAV: One file of the whole arrangement lands in your downloads. Your first three a month need no account; a free account gives you 120. For stems, 32-bit float or a loop range, use File → Export audio….

Questions about the Bitwig project to WAV converter?

We have answers.

Can I convert a Bitwig project to WAV without Bitwig?

With a .dawproject, yes — drop it here. Audio clips come out as recorded; note clips are played on stand-in instruments. A .bwproject cannot be read outside Bitwig, so export it first.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Your first three WAVs a month need no account, and opening the project needs none at all. A free account raises the renders to 120 a month.

Can I get stems?

Yes, for the tracks that carry audio: File → Export audio… → Stems writes each as its own WAV in a zip, lined up from zero. Stand-in parts come out in the mix only.

What bit depth and sample rate is the WAV?

24-bit when recordings are in the mix, 16-bit at 48 kHz when everything is a stand-in; File → Export audio… offers 16-bit, 24-bit or 32-bit float at 44.1 or 48 kHz.

Does a Studio One or Cubase DAWproject work?

Yes. DAWproject is one format whoever wrote it; a .dawproject from Studio One 6.5+ or Cubase 14+ renders the same way.

  • What a DAWproject carries, and what it cannot

A .dawproject is a zip: one XML document with the tracks, the clips, the notes, the mixer and the automation, plus an audio folder holding the recordings the clips play. So the recordings come with the file and play at their positions, under their track names. What the file cannot carry is sound Bitwig makes live — Polymer, Phase-4, The Grid, every CLAP and VST device — and no server here runs them. Note clips are played on stand-ins; audio clips that point at files outside the project have nothing to play, and the studio says how many.

  • Bit depth, stems, and what each file holds

With recordings in the mix the WAV is written in your browser at 24-bit; a project that is all stand-ins comes from our server at 16-bit, 48 kHz, which is all General MIDI samples can fill. File → Export audio… writes 16-bit, 24-bit or 32-bit float at 44.1 or 48 kHz, the whole mix or a loop range, and Stems writes one WAV per track that carries audio, every file starting at the same zero. Stand-in parts are in the mix, not in the zip. The mix carries track gain, pan, clip gain and fades; devices, modulators and automation are not rendered.
