A .dawproject file is a DAWproject — the open project-interchange format Bitwig and PreSonus created so a whole session can move between DAWs as one file. Bitwig Studio, Studio One and Cubase read and write it; most other DAWs don’t.

Unlike a DAW’s own project file, it’s documented and free to implement: the specification is open source, so an app can read one without reverse-engineering anything.

What’s actually inside a .dawproject file

A .dawproject is a zip container. Inside: project.xml, describing the session — tracks and their routing, clips and notes, tempo and time-signature changes, the mixer, sends and automation; metadata.xml, with the title and credits; the audio, embedded in the file or referenced beside it; and every plugin’s saved state as its own file. An EQ, compressor, gate and limiter have neutral built-in descriptions, so a DAW can rebuild them with its own devices.

Which DAWs open a .dawproject

Bitwig Studio 5 and later, Studio One 6.5 and later (now Fender Studio Pro) and Cubase 14 and later import and export it, and a few others are on the official support list. Logic Pro, Ableton Live, FL Studio and Pro Tools don’t read it, and REAPER only through a third-party tool.

How to open a .dawproject in Logic, Ableton, FL Studio or Pro Tools

Convert it to the DAW’s own format: Doseedo converts a .dawproject into a native Logic .logicx, Ableton .als, FL Studio .flp, Pro Tools session, or REAPER .rpp — whichever app exported it. Tracks and group tracks arrive with their names, levels, pans and mutes, clips with every note, audio with its files, tempo, time signature and markers; going to Logic, Ableton or Pro Tools, sends arrive too and the built-in EQ, compressor, gate and limiter map to the DAW’s own devices, and third-party plugins come across with their saved state where they’re installed. The honest limits: Bitwig’s own instruments and devices, CLAP plugins and clip gain don’t come across, and automation isn’t promised yet — the conversion report names each one.

The same conversion runs on your own machine too. Dø Desktop for macOS and Windows 10/11 reads the .dawproject on your drive and writes a native Logic Pro, Ableton Live, FL Studio, Pro Tools or REAPER project next to it — nothing uploads, there is no size ceiling and no monthly count. $39.99 once, not a subscription.

Can you convert a .dawproject to MP3?

Not with a file converter — the audio inside is the raw recordings, not the mix. To get an MP3 you render: open the file in a DAW that reads it (or convert it to yours) and export a mixdown. A project converter like Doseedo changes the project format, not the audio format.

FAQ

What opens a .dawproject file?

Bitwig Studio 5+, Studio One / Fender Studio Pro 6.5+ and Cubase 14+ import it natively. Logic Pro, Ableton Live, FL Studio and Pro Tools don’t — convert it to their native format instead.

Can Ableton or Logic open a .dawproject?

No. Neither reads DAWproject. Doseedo converts the .dawproject into a native .als or .logicx with the tracks, clips, notes, audio and mixer in place.

What is the difference between .dawproject and .bwproject?

A .bwproject is the project Bitwig saves for itself, in an undocumented format nothing else reads. A .dawproject is the open interchange file Bitwig exports for other apps.

Does a .dawproject include the audio?

Usually — the audio can be embedded in the file, which is how Bitwig and Doseedo write it, though an export can also reference files beside it.

Can I convert a .dawproject to MP3?

Not with a file converter — open it in a DAW that reads it, or convert it to yours, and export a mixdown. Project converters change the project format, not the audio format.
