How to get a WAV out of a Logic Pro project

You have a Logic project and something downstream wants audio (a mix engineer, a sync brief, another DAW that has never heard of Logic), and no Mac to open it on. The package carries the arrangement and, usually, the recordings. Those are written out as they are; Logic's own instruments are not in the file, so their parts are played on stand-ins.

  1. Add your .logicx: A .logicx is a folder that Finder shows as a file: on a Mac choose it with the folder picker, anywhere else drop a zip of it. Its arrangement is read on our server, and the recordings inside the package play from your copy. No account is needed to open it.
  2. It renders by itself: The studio opens on the arrangement and starts the WAV straight away: audio regions from the package, software-instrument parts on stand-ins picked from their track names, rendered on our server from a General MIDI sound set.
  3. Download the WAV: One file of the whole arrangement lands in your downloads. Your first three a month need no account; a free account gives you 120. For stems, 32-bit float or a loop range, use File → Export audio….

24-bit when recordings are in the mix, 16-bit at 48 kHz when everything is a stand-in; File → Export audio… offers 16-bit, 24-bit or 32-bit float at 44.1 or 48 kHz.

Why are some regions silent?

They point at audio outside the package. File → Project Management → Consolidate in Logic copies it in; zip the project again and drop that.

  • What travels inside a .logicx, and what does not

    A Logic project is a package: the arrangement and, when it was saved with its audio copied in, a Media folder holding the recordings. Those come along and play as recorded, at their positions, on their named tracks. What does not travel is anything Logic makes live: software instruments, Alchemy patches, Drummer, channel-strip plugins, Flex time. Software-instrument regions arrive as notes, and stand-ins picked from the track names play them. If audio regions come up silent, the project referenced files outside the package; File → Project Management → Consolidate in Logic copies them in.

  • Bit depth, stems, and what each file holds

    With recordings in the mix the WAV is written in your browser at 24-bit; a project that is all stand-ins comes from our server at 16-bit, 48 kHz, which is all General MIDI samples can fill. File → Export audio… writes 16-bit, 24-bit or 32-bit float at 44.1 or 48 kHz, the whole mix or a loop range, and Stems writes one WAV per track that carries audio, every file starting at the same zero. Stand-in parts are in the mix, not in the zip. The mix carries track gain, pan, region gain and fades; plugins, sends and automation are not rendered.
