How to get a WAV out of a Logic Pro project

You have a Logic project and something downstream wants audio — a mix engineer, a sync brief, another DAW that has never heard of Logic. What that side of the handover needs is a file it can open without decoding anything and write out again without re-encoding it, which rules out sending them the project. Here the arrangement is read out of the .logicx, played by modelled instruments, and written out as WAV. The performance is a new one.

  1. Add the project: Dragging a .logicx onto the page hands the browser a zero-byte entry, so use the folder button beside the file picker, or compress the package in the Finder first. Hand over the whole folder either way — the media Logic recorded into it is what the import-session route bounces.
  2. Assign the instruments: Notes carry no sound of their own, so a read project waits on the palette — thirty-six modelled players, and whichever one a track is given is the take you will bounce. That step runs on a GPU, and the free account is what covers it.
  3. Bounce to WAV: Export audio, under the File menu, does the render offline and writes 16- or 24-bit integer PCM, or 32-bit float, at 44.1 or 48 kHz, as the master mix, one selected track, or a zip of every audible track.

Can I convert a .logicx to WAV?

No. A project is instructions rather than audio, so a transcode has nothing to work on. What is possible instead is the notes played by modelled instruments, or Import session, which bounces the recordings the folder already carries — and neither one is the mix you hear in Logic.

Do I need an account?

Yes — a free one, and only for what comes after the reading. Opening the project costs nothing and happens signed out; the modelled render and the import-session route both sit behind the account.

Can I get each track as its own WAV?

Yes. The All stems source writes one file per audible track and hands them over as a zip — a muted track, a track another track's solo is keeping quiet, and a synthesized stem with nothing rendered yet are all left out. They share one zero, so they drop into another session in a single pass.

Does it render my plugins and automation?

No. Live plugin chains, automation lanes, aux sends, time-stretch and drum sub-stems are all outside the bounce. On the import-session route a Logic insert chain is recreated where a mapping for it exists — but that recreation plays back live only; the offline bounce does not run it.

  • The audio the project already carries

    A Logic project that kept its media INSIDE the folder arrives carrying real recordings: takes, printed tracks, bounced parts, sitting next to the document that arranges them. File → Import session reads that folder, rebuilds the arrangement, and loads each clip from the local file the browser already holds: at its position, on its named track, with the gains, pans and fades the project set. Export audio then writes those clips out as WAV, without Logic and without the Mac they were recorded on. The route renders no instruments and needs a free account. What comes back is the audio the project holds rather than a performance of it, held here as a compressed copy at a bitrate picked so what it discards stays inaudible on music. Nothing you can hear is missing. The word archive still does not apply.

  • A take, not a copy of your mix

    A project file carries the arrangement and points at everything else, and what it points at is a state of the Mac it was made on — a plugin version, a sample library, a patch somebody spent an afternoon on. None of that is data in the file, which is why the mix cannot be rebuilt from it here or by any other converter. A performance happens instead: the notes go to a modelled player and the part is played, rather than triggered one recorded note per pitch and transposed for the rest. It behaves like a take, too. Change the instrument on a track, bounce again, and you have a second reading of the same notes rather than a re-recording. It will not sound like Logic. It is not trying to.

  • The third depth is not a deeper integer

    16-bit and 24-bit WAVs store whole numbers on a fixed scale, and the writer clamps anything that runs past the end of it — full scale is a wall. The 32-bit option is a different file rather than a deeper one: its samples go down as floating point, which the header has to declare as a different kind of WAVE with an extra chunk saying how many frames it holds, and they are written exactly as the render produced them, unbounded. A peak above full scale survives in the file and comes back the moment somebody pulls a fader. That is the depth for a bounce going somewhere that will push it, 24-bit is the depth for a bounce going to a person, and 16-bit is what the dialog opens on — so it is the one to change.
