AI trumpet

Trumpet is one of the hardest instruments to fake, and the reason is dynamics. Play louder and the tone does not just get louder — it gets brighter, edgier, and eventually starts to blare. A sampled trumpet turned up is still a quiet recording played loudly, which is why programmed brass so often sounds like a keyboard preset.

Why brass is hard

A trumpet is a lip-driven resonator, and the player is part of the instrument. Embouchure pressure changes the harmonic balance continuously — the third partial is typically the strongest in the spectrum, and where that emphasis sits shifts with how hard the note is being pushed. That is what your ear reads as effort.

Sample libraries approximate this with layers: a recording at piano, another at mezzo, another at forte, and crossfades between. It works until a phrase crosses a layer boundary mid-note. A model that has learned the instrument's behaviour interpolates instead of crossfading, so a crescendo is one continuous change rather than three recordings fading into each other.

Range and register

The written range runs roughly E3 to C6, and the character is completely different across it. Low register is broad and slightly diffuse; the middle is the singing register most melodies live in; above the staff it narrows and takes real effort, which is audible. A line written high sounds strained because on a real instrument it is strained — that is worth keeping, not correcting.

Muted is a different instrument

A straight mute does not just make a trumpet quieter. It removes energy from the low partials and adds a nasal emphasis higher up, which is why muted trumpet reads as a distinct colour rather than a softer version of the same one. It is exposed here as its own instrument for that reason, not as a filter applied afterwards.

Questions

Does it follow MIDI velocity?

Yes, and as timbre rather than volume. A high-velocity note is brighter and harder-edged, not just louder — which is the difference between a part sounding played and sounding triggered.

Can I write the part myself?

Yes. Supply a MIDI file and pick trumpet, or describe the line and let the model write it. Both routes run through the same renderer.

Is muted trumpet available?

Yes, as a separate instrument rather than an effect, because a mute changes the harmonic balance rather than just the level.

What about a brass section?

There is a brass ensemble instrument for section writing, which is not the same as layering several solo trumpets — an ensemble has spread in tuning and timing that a stack of identical copies does not.
