How to get an MP3 out of a Pro Tools project

Somebody has sent you a Pro Tools session and you want to hear it — in a car, on a phone, in a reply to the mail it arrived in. Opening it the usual way means installing Pro Tools and an Avid account, and the free Intro tier only carries eight audio tracks, so anything bigger comes up with most of itself inactive. The music, though, is not locked inside the program: it is in the folder beside the session document.

  1. Add your session: A .ptx, or an older .ptf or .pts — and zip the whole session folder rather than the document alone, because the recordings live beside it in `Audio Files`. It opens in the browser studio, with no Pro Tools licence involved at any point.
  2. It is read on our server: A session document is a packed binary rather than text, and it is unpacked on our side rather than in the page — which is what puts this one behind a free account.
  3. Bounce it to MP3: File → Export audio… renders the session offline in the browser and writes the master mix as a 256 kbps MP3. The recordings play from your own copies while it does.

Can I convert a .ptx to MP3?

No — not as a file conversion. Nothing here renders a session into audio on a server: it opens in the browser, plays the recordings from the folder you handed over, and bounces that. Your exact mix, plugins and automation included, has to come out of Pro Tools.

Do I need an account?

Yes, a free one. The session goes to our side to be unpacked rather than to your browser — the FL Studio and REAPER readers are the local ones — and the studio it opens in sits behind the same account. The bounce itself runs in the page.

I added the .ptx on its own and heard nothing

Then the recordings stayed behind. Pro Tools keeps them in `Audio Files` next to the session document, so the folder is the thing that carries the music — zip the folder and bring it in with File → Import session.

What is left out of the bounce?

Live plugin chains, automation lanes, aux sends, time-stretch and the drum sub-stem fan-out — what gets printed is the clips and the faders. Most of that had already gone missing once, at the read, which is the other reason this is a reference and not a mix.

  • The music is in the folder, not the file

    A .ptx is a map, not a container. The recordings it points at are files sitting in the `Audio Files` folder beside it, which is why a Pro Tools session travels as a folder and why a lone .ptx opens silent — the arrangement without the sound. That is also the good news, because the folder that makes a session awkward to send is the same folder that carries the music: hand it over and the sound comes with it. File → Import session takes the whole thing, rebuilds the arrangement and loads each clip from the local file your browser already holds — at its real position, with the track names, volumes, pans and mutes the session set. Clip fades, clip gain, sends and automation do not survive the Pro Tools read, so what lines up is the arrangement and the faders, not the mix moves.

  • What happens to the MIDI tracks

    Pro Tools is audio-first, and its MIDI and instrument tracks are the part this read does not carry: the lanes come across by name, with their fader and pan, and no notes inside them. Nothing stands in for a plugin you do not have, and nothing is quietly invented either — a MIDI part in the session simply will not be in the MP3. If that part is what you need, export MIDI from Pro Tools and take the .mid to MIDI to audio, where each lane takes one of thirty-six modelled instruments and is performed on a GPU behind a free account. That is a re-performance and not your sounds, which is worth knowing before you send the result to anyone.

  • A reference bounce, and what is missing from it

    The file is written at 256 kbps by a LAME encoder compiled to JavaScript, so the encoding itself happens in the page. What it encodes is the session's own recordings summed at the session's own faders and nothing else — no insert chain, no automation pass, no aux send, no time-stretch. That is a reference bounce in the old sense: good enough to check an arrangement, a take, a running order, an edit point, and worth labelling as one when it goes out, because whoever made the session will hear the difference immediately and wonder what happened to their mix. Their bounce is still the deliverable. This one is for the people waiting to hear it.
