A MIDI keyboard hands your DAW a note-on and a note-off. A recording hands it a continuous signal with no note boundaries in it at all. Closing that gap — not detecting pitch — is the hard part.
Play the instrument you already play
People who want to convert audio to MIDI without a keyboard usually are not short of hardware. The idea arrived on a guitar, or hummed into a phone at a bus stop, or on a horn — and re-entering it on a keyboard would mean playing it badly twice.
So the routing matters. Audio goes to notes through a different model depending on what is playing: a dedicated polyphonic model for piano, register-conditioned pitch tracking for solo winds, brass, strings and bass, and a general polyphonic model for guitar and ensemble material. Name the instrument, or let it be inferred from the audio.
A single sung line and a strummed chord are different problems, and a tracker tuned for one is poor at the other. Saying which one you handed over is the cheapest accuracy available.
The timing is what breaks
Notes are the easy half. What ruins a transcription is metrical: where bar one starts, whether that figure is a dotted eighth or a triplet, whether the phrase begins on the beat or just before it.
So tempo, downbeat and meter are detected first and the notes are fitted to that grid — rather than notes first and a grid guessed afterwards from them.
The grid is also allowed to move. If you leaned into the last chord, the tempo map leans with you. Rubato is preserved rather than flattened onto a click, which matters far more for a take played by hand than for something you programmed.
If it is a full mix, separate it first
Pointing a transcriber at a finished mix and expecting a clean part for one instrument is the most common way to get mush back. The bass, the kick and the piano's left hand all live in the same two octaves.
For a full mix the order is: separate into stems — vocals, drums, bass, guitar, keys — then transcribe each stem on its own. That single step is the biggest accuracy win in the chain, bigger than any tweak to the transcriber itself.
What comes back
A multitrack MIDI arrangement, one lane per part, plus a chord track — chords are detected in the same pass — and the tempo map from the performance.
It is editable, and that is the point. Fix a wrong note in the MIDI lane; the score re-engraves from the same edit, and the MIDI you export is what you corrected rather than what the model first guessed.
Exports are MIDI per part, or a Logic or Ableton session with the stems on named tracks, the per-part MIDI, the tempo map and a chord guide. Usually that is what you wanted in the first place — the idea sitting in the DAW, not a file on your desktop.
Where it struggles
No transcription of a real recording is perfect. Dense mixes, heavy distortion and heavy reverb are all harder: distortion adds harmonics that look like notes, and reverb smears note endings so the offsets land late.
If you have any say over the source, record dry, close and alone. A plain phone recording of one instrument in a quiet room converts better than a loud, wet, fully mixed reference.

Do I need a MIDI keyboard to make MIDI?
No. MIDI is note data; it does not care whether the notes came from a keyboard or were detected in a recording. Sing a line, play a guitar, or upload an existing track, and the notes come back as an editable MIDI arrangement.
Can I hum a melody and get MIDI?
Yes. A sung or hummed line is monophonic material, handled by register-conditioned pitch tracking. Sing it in a quiet room and hold the notes rather than sliding between them, and the note boundaries come out much cleaner.
Does it work on a full song, or only on a single instrument?
Both, but they take different paths. A full mix is separated into stems first — vocals, drums, bass, guitar, keys — and each stem is transcribed on its own, which is the single biggest accuracy win. A solo recording goes straight to transcription.
Will the MIDI be quantized to a click?
Only if the performance was. Tempo, downbeat and meter are detected first and the tempo map is allowed to move, so a take that slows into a cadence stays where you played it instead of being snapped to a fixed grid.
How accurate is it?
